International Women in Engineering Day – Ports & Marine Spotlight

In the lead-up to International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) on 23 June, BG&E Resources (BGER) is highlighting our female engineers who are making valuable contributions to the profession.

Through their commitment to proactively engaging with industry, female engineers from BGER’s Ports and Marine team recently attended the ‘WA Women in Ports Lunch’ hosted by PIANC.

Tiffany Felstead, Senior Structural Engineer who attended the event, says, “It was a great opportunity to meet with other women who are working in the ports and maritime industry, spanning from engineering, coastal, asset management, operations, and environmental backgrounds.”

When asked how the industry can continue to support women in the sector, she says, “The PIANC event is a great example of how industry bodies can host targeted events focused on bringing women in the industry together to network, collaborate and grow.”

Kylie Wright, Principal Marine Structural Engineer, says, “When I was exploring career options in high school, I was excited by engineering because engineers get to design and create infrastructure to improve the world around us and I wanted to do that.”

She continues, “Whilst exciting, the engineering industry is still male-dominated, so having the backing of both industry and employers who are showing women they are not alone, and proactively working to empower, support and advocate for gender diversity and inclusivity is very promising for the future generations.”

As a mother of two under 10, Kylie is one of many who are raising children whilst pursuing a career in engineering. She says, “The best thing about working at BGER is having the support and ability to work flexibly when I need to support my family.”

Udaya Kilgour, Materials and Durability Specialist says, “After working in the industry for two decades, I feel a responsibility to encourage the next generation of young women to pursue a rewarding career in engineering.”

She explains, “By building positive ideas early of what it means to be an engineer, I think females who are interested in STEM subjects will see that it’s a promising pathway. It’s exciting to have a vital contribution to the innovative solutions that help clients address real-world problems.”

She adds, “BGER is actively involved in this area, through its participation in secondary and tertiary education events and career fairs through to fostering industry relationships to promote STEM career opportunities.”

BGER proudly supports our female engineers working across all facets of Engineering and Design and is pleased to share their insights in honour of INWED.
