Tailings Management Unveiled: Expert Insights into Meeting Global Standards

The BG&E Resources (BGER) and TailCon Projects team hosted an industry-leading workshop event last week.

Jason Fong, Director – Geotechnical at BGER and Derrick McKenzie – Managing Director at Tailcon Projects gathered to share their experience from both an engineering design and an owner operator perspective on the journey to Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) compliance.

In recent years, numerous high-profile failures of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF) have occurred which have had catastrophic impacts including loss of multiple lives and long-term contamination of land and waterways.

Welcoming geotechnical professionals from across the industry, they gathered to eagerly understand how the GISTM, a framework published in 2019 can enhance the safety of TSFs.

Jason Fong, Director – Geotechnical at BGER prefaced the session with, “The importance of clear governance was highlighted in nearly all instances of the recent failures. GISTM encompasses several key components across its structure that cover the entire lifecycle of a TSF – from design and construction to closure and post-closure.”

He adds, “The case study of Evolution Mining shows one way that the governance aspects of GISTM can be balanced with commercial imperatives by allowing for integration of critical challenge in the fit-for-purpose design, construction, operation and closure of tailings management facilities.”
