Steve Rooth, our Regional Lead for New South Wales, knows that great work happens when teams come together. Recently, he visited our Perth office to connect with the West Coast team.
“Collaboration is everything,” Steve shares. “Getting face-to-face with our Perth team isn’t just about sharing updates; it’s about collaborating to see challenges and solutions from every angle so we can support our clients better.”
Building Connections Across Australia
Steve has strong ties to both coasts—though a Newcastle local, he spent five years working in Perth, including a year managing civil projects in Kalgoorlie. “Living and working across the East and West Coasts has helped me understand the unique needs of each client.”
Steve’s commitment to understanding client needs recently took him and his team to Newcastle Port’s wharf facilities, where they spent a day on-site. “When we connect with clients, we get to fully understand their challenges and goals,” he explains.
This mindset has helped Steve build strong client relationships that have led to new opportunities, like partnering with the Muswellbrook Shire Council on a vital drainage improvement project. “BGER was chosen for our commitment to local communities,” Steve says.
“What makes this project even more special is that it’s the same council where I began my career as a site engineer for a water treatment plant, as part of the UNISS scholarship I received while studying at the University of Newcastle. It feels great to give back to the community that helped me get started.”
Empowered Teams, Thriving Communities
Reflecting on his role, Steve highlights the value of teamwork. “I’m here to support the team so everyone can share their ideas and succeed together. When we listen to and uplift each other, any challenge becomes a win.”
For him, every project is a chance to create a real impact. “Take opportunities when they come your way—they’re your chance to make a difference in the community around you.”
Outside of work, Steve actively volunteers in his local community. Recently, he helped renovate the Thirsty Messiah Brewery in Broadmeadow, doing everything from building walls to drafting a flood evacuation plan. “It’s rewarding to be part of a local success story,” he says.
When he’s off the clock, you’ll find Steve water skiing, a lifelong passion which began at the age of two. “These days, you’ll catch me hitting the Williams River in Seaham, NSW.”
As for travel, his favourite memories are from Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. “The food there is amazing—goulash and dumplings are some of my favourites, and I enjoy recreating these dishes at home!”
