Meet James Bristow

Meet James Bristow, a Lead Electrical Engineer in our Newcastle team, who has always been fascinated by how electrical systems work.

From a young age, James was captivated by the inner workings of electrical devices, often dismantling and building gadgets to understand their mechanisms. This early fascination evolved into a lifelong pursuit, inspiring him to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Western Sydney.

Throughout his 20-year-long career to date, James has undertaken numerous projects, but one that stands out is his management of the Bateman’s Bay Bridge upgrade for RMS (Roads and Maritime Services). Reflecting on this milestone, James recalls, “It was one of the first big projects I was given to look after. The project went extremely well, and we delivered the project under budget. I was very happy with my involvement in managing the stakeholders and contractors involved in delivering the project.”

At BGER, James plays a key role in building a local electrical engineering presence for the team in Newcastle. “We have been able to provide tailored support locally to our clients on the East Coast, which has fostered greater collaboration with our clients.”

James adds, “One of the best things about working at BGER is the opportunity to collaborate with different disciplines, including the Energy and Electrical engineering teams in Perth. It is rewarding to be a part of a diverse range of projects to help shift the dial in the transition to net zero.”

James’ favourite superhero, Batman, embodies his approach to life. He says, “I’m a very organised planner and I believe in always being prepared.” He also shared his advice to his younger self, saying, “Don’t be afraid to take on opportunities that come your way.”

Outside of work, James finds joy in spending time with his two daughters and in being an avid Star Wars fan. He enjoys immersing himself in the worlds of sci-fi and fantasy novels, such as Magician by R.E.Feist. He’s also a skilled beer brewer and regularly competes in CrossFit competitions, saying, “For me, the best part is the process and enjoying the social side of the sport. I enjoy every moment of it.”

When asked about his favourite holiday destination, James enjoys the serene coastal city of Port Macquarie and going on cruise trips, with Noumea in New Caledonia being a standout destination from his travels.
